Picture Perfect Day

A cool breeze swept through camp yesterday evening, bringing with it a cool front. This morning we awoke to cool temps and blue skies. The humidity was virtually none all day. And the temps stayed in the 70’s. I wore my light pullover all day long. This is the way a summer day in June on the mountain should be!

It was a perfect day for our final full rotation of activities in Jr. Camp. Tomorrow we’ll take care of some necessary to do’s like packing and returning lost and found (there’s a lot!). We hope to have these cabins decently in order when you arrive Wednesday morning! In the afternoon boys will participate in their final two regular activities. And tomorrow night we’ll hold an Olympics extravaganza on the team sports field. Each age group will participate in several field games. There will be music and it will be under the lights. After that last bit of competition we’ll gather in the gym for a few camp songs and parting words. And then, as a reminder, gates will open Wednesday morning at 7:30 AM CDT.

So much happened in activities today. In Wilderness boys practiced building fires, a skill most every boy loves working on. I heard a great “fish story” today. A camper caught a 5 pound bass with his cane pole, red/white bobber, and cricket! The counselor said he looked up and he was dragging his pole back with a large fish bouncing up the bank. We do practice catch and release so the fish will live to see another day.

Horseback rode the trails surrounding camp all day. Our trails weave in and out of the woods and several fields owned by Alpine. Our property also borders Desoto State Park and Little River Canyon National Preserve so we are blessed with some nice, meandering trails. PA Games gave their classes a chance to ride the Zipline on our high ropes course. I talked with a first time camper at dinner who grinned from ear to ear as he told me about riding it twice this afternoon.

Watefront opened up both waterslides and let boys ride as much as they were able. We’ve had such good rain that the river is clear and clean and free flowing. Disc Sports brought all their skills to the course for some final competition on their last 18.

Mrs. Gail is pulling out all the stops for the end of the term. French toast and bacon for breakfast! At midday we dined on breaded chicken patties, green beans, and mashed potatoes. This evening we enjoyed a hamburger buffet complete with all the fixin’s and chips. Rumor has it she’ll be flipping pancakes for us in the morning!

Thanks for reading and good night for now, Glenn
