A Word from Carter

“I have a conviction that a few weeks spent in a well-organized summer camp may be of more value educationally than a whole year of formal school work.”-Charles William Eliot, who at 35 was the youngest president of Harvard University

Good evening parents, friends and family of Alpine.  A longtime camp mother sent me this quote in early spring and I have loved sharing it camp families.  It is a great reminder of why we send our children to camp.  All the trips to Walmart and Target, the time spent of labeling t-shirts and towels and the nights we miss tucking them in are all worth the gifts that camp will continue to give them over a lifetime.

A counselor, of middle school aged boys, was telling me today that his cabin had engineered a pulley system in their cabin.  It is complete with a basket that will pass notes around the cabin.  At camp, they have time to create, play and plan in ways they might not anywhere else.  They have time to come up with an idea and work together to execute it.  They are not worried about what grade they will get or how much time they will have to play a video game.

Even in the small things in camp, boys are learning how to problem solve, work as a team, they are gaining confidence and learning about their gifts.  They have no idea the lessons they are learning.  But from cabin inspection to the ropes course, they are gaining skills.  Over the next few weeks, Glenn will be giving more insights into camp life and glimpses of what your boys are learning.

As I close tonight, I want to leave you with the scripture passage that was chosen for all of camp to read and study this term.  It is our prayer, that while they are here they will learn more about the truths in the following verses.  On the last night of camp, we will say this verse together before saying our goodbyes.

“Do you not know?  Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired and weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.  He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”       Isaiah 40:28-31

We love having your boys with us this summer!  Thank you for sharing them with us!  And know that we are taking care of them like we would our own children!

Good night,

Carter
