New Associate Director

Carter and I are so excited to officially announce that Adam “Bully” Shields will be returning to Alpine this fall to fill the position of Associate Director.  For those of you who have been affiliated with Alpine you most likely know Bully, as he worked here full time from 2009 to 2014, and before that as a counselor and head counselor in college.  He left to pursue a great job at Mississippi State in the Alumni office.  We are thrilled that he has decided to return to Alpine once again!

If you don’t know Bully, he is a proud Mississippi State grad.  During his time at State he was very involved on campus, including serving as one of the Bulldog mascots for several years (hence the nickname).  He holds a degree in communications and is one of the most outgoing and positive people you will ever meet.

He will take on additional responsibilities at Alpine.  During the school year his primary focus will be traveling around the Southeast spreading the word about Alpine to current and future campers.  Please plan on being in touch with him in the fall if you have a group of folks that you think would like to hear more about Alpine.  During the summer, he’ll be helping with administration and program and a little bit of everything, like all of us.  He’ll help serve as a parent liason, especially for first time campers.

We are so grateful to have Bully back!

Today has been a picture perfect camp day.  It’s warm but not sweltering.  We did have a looming pop up thunderstorm off to our west during the last period this afternoon.  We pulled out our water activities to be extra cautious but everyone else was able to carry on as planned.

Tonight marks the first overnights of the term.  All of the Hunters left just before dinner, hiking out to Hunter Overnight.  It’s a nice, large grassy patch in the woods past Horseback.  A homemade rock fire pit is the perfect place for cooking hot dogs over an open fire.  And of course, S’mores!  Boys will sleep in their sleeping bags on large tarps under a clear sky of stars.  They’ll sing a few songs around the campfire and read a camp favorite, The Lorax, by Dr. Suess.

3 cabins of Warriors hiked out of main camp just before dinner.  They too were headed to a nice grassy patch cut into some woods on camp property.  Some of the best memories of camp will happen on these overnights.  Our goal (pending rain) is for every cabin of boys to get to sleep at least one night under the stars.

This morning we enjoyed hot oatmeal, cinnamon toast, and scrambled eggs.  Complimenting each breakfast is a cold bar with greek and regular yogurt, granola, and assorted fruits - usually blueberries, bananas, pineapple, and grapes.  Tonight Mrs. Gail made a homemade chicken tetrazzini that was out of this world.  It was a new recipe to Alpine and a bit hit.  She served it with green salad, and buttered toast.

Thanks for reading and good night for now,

Glenn
