Slaughterball!

As I write this blog update, on my screened in porch across from the gym, I hear chants and screams from that general direction.  Chants of “Cherokee, Cherokee, Cherokee” and “Ooo ungowah we got that Mohawk power (don’t ask me!)”.  It’s Friday night on Lookout Mountain and that generally means one thing at Alpine: Slaughterball!!!  As the refrain to the Glee club song goes, “Slaughterball, it rocks the gym walls!”  It’s sung to the tune of the old rock classic, Wild Thing.

Slaughterball is Alpine’s version of dodgeball.  Ask any Alpiner, young or old, and they’ll tell you it’s much better than traditional dodgeball.  We’ve been playing it since the 70’s probably, maybe longer.  Cherokee v. Mohawk duke it out, with dense, nerf type balls.  The wonderful thing about boys is that at the end of the night we all walk back to cabins as friends.

It’s been a hot one today at camp, a bit steamy.  Your campers are no worse for the wear.  Water breaks are offered at every period.  We also have a powerade station that serves cold powerade all day.

Camp has hit it’s stride.  Activities are in full swing and boys are having a blast.  I watched our capable basketball counselors teaching the proper technique to shoot a basketball this afternoon to a group of young boys.  Tennis worked on strokes in preparation for the Alpine Open.  May not be on grass courts in front of thousands of people, but in our world it’s a pretty big tennis tournament.  Brackets will be made for each class and early rounds begin next week I believe.

For dinner we picnicked tonight with a Hamburger buffet, once again a much needed break for the kitchen boys.  Baked beans, chips and all the fixin’s topped it off.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.  We have fun plans around here.  Look forward to filling you in soon.

Thanks for reading and good night for now,

Glenn
