The Element of Surprise

Yesterday was another beautiful, fun, and eventful day at Alpine. Campers enjoyed a full day of activities as we continued through our second rotation.  After a normal day, the boys were expecting a normal night of Glee Club practice and night activities as well.  However, that was not the case.

For dinner we enjoyed a delicious dinner of ham, macaroni and chees, and pinto beans, campers enjoyed a little bit of free time before gathering in the gym for Glee Club. They sang camp favorites new and old such as The Mountain, Little River, and DeSoto Girl. As they began to sing the final song, out of nowhere came Melon Head Mater and his posse from right here in Mentone. When Melon Head and his crew are causing trouble for the local deputies, they like to play some of their favorite bluegrass tunes. They have every instrument they need, including a banjo, fiddle, and a guitar. However, they’re on the search for one unique instrument to make their sound complete, and it just so happens that we have one here at Alpine, the very rare and unique sounding triangle. Melon Head and his band escaped with our triangle and the music began to play signifying to the campers it was Mission: Impossible.

After it was announced we would be playing Mission: Impossible, Glenn and Roderick delivered their rules and instructions, it was off to the cabin for campers to put on their darkest clothes and best camouflage. Right at dark, cabins began receiving their codes and stealthily moving throughout camp. (For a more detailed description of how Mission: Impossible works please see our blog: Mission Impossible: The Quest for the Maple Syrup.) Thanks to Mountain Cabins 7 and 10 and Ridge Cabin 4, the triangle was recovered and safely returned!

There is never a dull moment here at Alpine.  Typically Mission: Impossible is held later on in the term, and that’s when the campers expect it. It was fun surprising them and watching the campers’ expressions as they slowly began to realize what was happening.  You never know when a normal, every day activity may turn into a special event.  Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more blogs to come.
