Chief Trip Departs

From Carter

Good evening Alpine families,

This morning we woke up to warm grits, eggs, toast and our delicious breakfast bar (complete with fresh fruit, granola and yogurt).  After breakfast, our Second Year Chiefs (boys just finishing 9th grade) headed off on their four day back packing trip on the Appalachian Trail.  Their journey will end on Thursday when they arrive at the Nantahala Outdoor Center to paddle down the Nantahala River in duckies, individual inflatable kayaks.

For Glenn and me, it is an exciting day to see the boys walking down the road from the Ridge with their backpacks and pile on the bus.  We have watched many of them grow up over the summers and have come to know the ones who started camping later as part of our own family.  We know that they are embarking on an adventure that will be so much fun but that will also be apart of how the Lord will mold them while they are at camp.  This morning before they left, we prayed for the conversations that they will have walking on the trail and sitting around the campfire at night.  Those are precious times that they will have with their counselors and with their fellow campers.  They have been preparing and looking forward to this trip for the last few days of camp.  Glenn often tells stories from when he was a Second Year Chief and made the same trek.  He is still close to guys he hiked with when he was chief and when he made the trip when he was a Second Year Chief counselor.

Back at camp, we just finished a delicious BBQ dinner in the Dining Hall.  Then boys headed off to Glee Club to sing about french toast, slaughter ball and DeSoto girls.  I walked our puppy, Scout, out to in camp this evening and he had lots of greetings from campers headed off to play Jedi ball, Angle ball and hockey in the gym.  I love taking the puppy out having campers run up to tell me all about their dog from home and what tricks he/she can do or what kind of trouble he/she can get into.

It has been a great day on the mountain!  Cannot wait to see what tomorrow brings for this camp full of boys!

Take care, Carter
